The spectacle

COP 15 is a mix of many things besides political negotiations (many of which seem to be behind closed doors anyway): activist stunts, like Fossil of the Day, trade conference (to satisfy all your windmill, pod car and remote sensing needs), photo opportunities, press conferences, cafeterias, meetings of the minds, schmoozing... There was a little climatology, but not much. The IPCC had a few meetings describing the contents of the next Assessment Report (the state of the art of climate change understanding due out in a few years), otherwise the nature of climate change is largely an underlying pretext, rather than a discussion item, with the meetings here now focused on deciding what to do about it.
