Local change starts now
The World Mayors Summit on Climate was held in Mexico City in November of this year. Yesterday, there was a meeting held with mayors from all over the world discussing the outcomes of the summit. 143 cities signed the Mexico City Pact and pledged to reduce their emissions voluntarily (only four of these were from the U.S.--Los Angeles, Burnsville, Des Moines, and North Little Rock). The take home message from this meeting is that we are responsible at a local level to create the impetus for change. Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from the ground up is a solution that is immediate and tangible. If we don't reduce our emissions on a local level, then we are just as guilty for impeding progress as they are.
